Wednesday 16th August has got me ‘all shook up’ 🙁 It is the 40th anniversary of the death of music legend Elvis Presley.
I am an unashamed Elvis fan. I didn’t really know any of his music until A Little Less Conversation was released and I was interested enough to buy a CD of his Number One hits.
I love it.
The rock and roll music makes me wish I had more sense of rhythm and could dance to it properly. Elvis’ voice is so rich and warm especially in his romantic songs.
So here are my top Elvis songs:
-
Wooden Heart
-
In the Ghetto
-
Suspicious Minds
-
Jailhouse Rock
-
Don’t Be Cruel
As you can see, my favourite song isn’t one of his classics. It is a lovely gentle song from one of his films. Simple yet timeless. ‘Treat me nice, treat me good, treat me like you really should…I don’t have a wooden heart’ is a reminder to lovers everywhere that our actions have consequences and it is so easy to hurt those we love because we know their weaknesses.
My second favourite is another one that isn’t perhaps his famous style either. Instead it is a social commentary of how poverty is inescapable for some just due to their birth. This is particularly poignant since becoming a parent and wanting the best for my children, wanting them to have more than I ever had and achieve more than me. But the children in this song don’t have any opportunity 🙁
My grandmother is a huge Elvis fan too and I can only imagine what a huge impact he made on the music scene and on the wider culture and society.
In your words Elvis, you will be ‘always on my mind’…
